Zavorotnaya Bay

Zavorotnaya Bay was formed after the construction of the Irkutsk hydroelectric power station. A narrow rocky spit 800 meters long in the form of a horn separates the bay from Lake Baikal. The bottom of Zavorotnaya Bay was dredged up to 6 meters for ships to enter, and now it is an ideal shelter from all the Baikal winds.

The geological settlement in Zavorotnaya Bay was built in 1962 after the discovery of the world's first deposit of microquartzite - an abrasive material of very high strength for mirror grinding of metal. Later, similar deposits were discovered in Canada and Central Asia. According to its characteristics, microquartzite is more effective than diamond paste. In 1970, a road to the field was built-2.8 kilometers to the serpentine, 4 kilometers to the quarry. Since 1993, microquartzite has not been mined.
