103 Excursion "Irkutsk as a Orthodox city"

No city beyond the Urals has as many Orthodox churches and temples as Irkutsk. Many religious buildings were lost during the years of Soviet power, but even the third of the churches that survived after the period of forced atheism sends us the light of Orthodox culture, which has not been extinguished for centuries. The tour will introduce you to the most striking religious monuments of architecture and will be interesting not only for adherents of the Orthodox Church, but also for anyone who wants to get acquainted with the history of Russia and Siberia.

Sights of Irkutsk visited during the tour:

- Church of the Saviour (style - Russian architecture. The oldest stone building that has been preserved not only in the city, but also in Eastern Siberia)

- Epiphany Cathedral (style-Siberian Baroque. Founded in 1718, it was the main temple of the city)

- The chapel of the Kazan Cathedral ( now lost Cathedral in the Russian-Byzantine style, which was one of the largest and most beautiful in Russia, was the center of not only religious, but also social and political life of the city)

-Kharlampievskaya Church ( built in the "Russian style of sea discoveries", the Church was associated with the development of the Russian America and the discoveries of Russian merchants and navigators. The wedding of the hereditary noblewoman Sofia Fedorovna Omirova and 29-year-old fleet Lieutenant Alexander Kolchak took place here)

- Holy Trinity Church (is a striking example of "Siberian Baroque" in Irkutsk. Since its construction it has been preserved almost in its original form)

- Holy cross Church (the most original monument of the Siberian Baroque, which received its fame due to the unique decorative plastic facades. The only temple in Siberia that has completely preserved the interiors of the XVIII century)

- Kazan Church (recreated in its original form after almost 70 years of closure, the Church is a unique monument in its beauty. It is distinguished by its grandeur and colossal forms)

- Knyaz-Vladimir temple (located on the territory of the Knyaz-Vladimir male Orthodox monastery, conceals many mysteries of history. Here, at a depth of three meters, right under the emergency exit of the Church, a mysterious underground passage was discovered, the purpose of which is still a mystery)

- Znamensky monastery (the oldest female monastery in Siberia, which has become a powerful center of Orthodox spiritual culture. On the territory of the monastery is now the residence of Metropolitan Vadim of Irkutsk and Angarask )
